Historic-Federal-Provincial Agreement Creates Opportunities for Social Housing

On June 9, 2009, Jim Watson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing (MMAH), announced an agreement between the provincial and federal governments on a social housing renovation and retrofit program. This program will see $704 million invested over the next two years in the rehabilitation and renovation of social housing, and presents opportunities that service managers and housing providers have not seen in many years.

The Social Housing Services Corporation (SHSC) applauds this financial and political investment in housing by both levels of government. These dollars can have a significant impact on the physical health of the social housing stock, and can provide real opportunities for energy efficiency improvements and reduced operating costs.

SHSC Announces New Menu of Services to Support Federal- Provincial Social Housing Program

SHSC understands that the tight timeframes for this program will present significant challenges for many service managers and housing providers. To ensure that all service managers and housing providers are able to take full advantage of the funding, SHSC and its subsidiaries are developing a Menu of Services to support this program.

SHSC has created this Menu of Services based on feedback from service managers and housing providers and will give them the tools and resources they need to spend wisely on quality renovations and retrofit projects within the required timelines. Some of these services are available now:
