About the Asset Management Centre

There is a demonstrated need for the social housing sector in Ontario to work together and create a unified approach to community sustainability. That is why the social housing sector, municipalities and the provincial government came together to establish an Asset Management Centre (AMC). AMC wants to help the social housing sector continue to build and renew communities.

Why Asset Management?

Ontario’s social housing is a $40 billion asset that is home to hundreds of thousands of our most vulnerable citizens. The over 230,000 homes are a key foundation for low-income families and individuals across Ontario, but buildings do not stand in isolation. The decline of the housing stock not only affects the residents who live within them, but also their surrounding communities.

Closing the Gap

Housing is at a critical stage. Housing providers and service managers want and need to pay attention to their capital repairs now or the asset will be lost to future generations. But, the gap between repair costs and available dollars is growing. It needs to be dealt with through a coordinated, sector driven approach.

Who is AMC?

AMC is a collaborative, cross-sectoral organization. With SHSC acting as the secretariat, AMC includes representatives from:

  • Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation
  • Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada – Ontario Region
  • Local Housing Corporations
  • Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure
  • Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing
  • Ontario Non-Profit Housing Association
  • Service Manager Housing Network
  • SHSC
  • SHSC Financial Inc.
  • The Agency for Co-operative Housing

This representation is reflected in the Steering Committee and sub-committees of AMC – Education, Finance, Policy, and Technical. Each sub-committee plays an important role developing the tools and resources that are part of working towards a comprehensive approach to asset management.

What we do

The Asset Management Centre coordinates efforts within the sector to set standards and develop a framework to better manage capital assets. We have assembled and maintain a research and knowledge base to support informed decision-making. The Centre identifies best practices and standards so that social housing providers, municipalities, and residents can thrive. We want to build and renew communities.

In May 2009, the AMC launched the Asset Management Resource Kit, which is a suite of building condition assessment and energy audit resources and tools.
